About Dan Ablett
Dan Ablett was born in 1986 in Subiaco and started piano studies at the age of 4. At age 7 Dan picked up the sticks for the first time after several years of hitting every known surface with his hands. At age 8 Dan started drum studies with Perth veteran drum teacher Lindsey Evans and then continued for a short stint with local Irish drummer Stewart Smith. At age 10 (year 6) Dan was accepted into his High School jazz band, which he stayed in until his graduation. The time spent in this ensemble proved to be life changing, as Dan chose to persue music professionally, specifically jazz. This band also introduced Dan to Kevin Fenner, a great local player/band leader/composer which led to other projects. During HighSchool Dan performed and recorded with the Jazz Saints and the Kevin Fenner Quartet, as well as the standard Orchestral and Concert band playing that the school make you do. Dan also played and recorded with punk bands ‘The Innaplicable’ ‘Back to Square One’ and ‘Rear View Mirror’, all of which regularly entered Battle of the Bands competitions (and never actually lost a single one). Also during his highschool years Dan started playing for his church, Churchlands Christian Fellowship and was given the oppertunity to play with the likes of Andrew Fisenden, Simon Fisenden, Michael Thomas, Jono McNiel, Matthew Styles and many others. At CCF Dan became comfortable performing infront of large crowds as the average atendance of a service ranged from 800 - 1300 people. Dan also recorded a full length albums with CCF, called ‘Shout to You’ Towards the end of school and around some fairly major health scares, Dan reprioritized his life and persued music passionately, and started lessons with Andrew Fisenden. During this time Dan undertook TEE Music, and towards the end of year 12, Dan commenced lessons with Chris Tarr, and prepared for an audition to study music at the Conservitory of Music (WAAPA) on a tertiary level. Since leaving school and joining the Con, Dan has enjoyed working as a musician in Perth playing with original acts, cover bands, at weddings, parties, functions and touring the south west. Dan is in his 3rd and final year of a music degree at WAAPA and is aiming to graduate with a Bach. of Music (Jazz Composition and Arrangement) under the guidance of Graeme Lyall. Dan has also recently joined ‘Cutain Fall’, an original rock outfit based in Perth. The group has recorded an album recently and it is still in the mastering process. Hopefully it will be availible early 2007. Watch out for this band, great things are starting to happen! Dan’s other current projects include: ‘Equinox’, ‘DKA TRIO’, ‘WAYJO Big Band’, ‘DEATH BY HIHAT’, and Sarah Mackenzie trio/quintet.
